About vow sacrifice
What is a vow (adak) sacrifice?
A vow (adak, Arabic nadhr) is when a person makes binding upon themselves, for the sake of Allah, an act of worship that is not otherwise obligatory for them. A vow sacrifice is the animal slaughtered to fulfil that promise — usually made conditional on a wish coming true and carried out once it does.
Who may not eat the meat of a vow sacrifice?
The meat of a vow sacrifice is given to people in need. The person who made the vow, their spouse, parents, grandparents, children and grandchildren may not eat from it, and neither may other well-off people.
When should a vow sacrifice be made?
A vow tied to a condition should be fulfilled at the first opportunity once the condition is met. An unconditional vow may be fulfilled at any time, although it is better not to delay it.
What conditions must the animal meet?
The same conditions as for any sacrificial animal apply:
- Age: sheep and goats must be at least 1 year old, cattle and water buffalo 2 years, camels 5 years. A sheep of at least six months that looks as well-grown as a one-year-old may also be sacrificed.
- Health: the animal must be healthy, well-fed and without serious defects. Animals that are severely ill, very thin, blind, have horns broken off at the root, or have lost more than half of an ear or the tail are not eligible. Being naturally hornless or having a small hole in the ear is not an obstacle.
Can a person withdraw from a vow?
A vow is a promise made to Allah. The Qur'an commands keeping one's promises and fulfilling vows, and praises those who do so. A vow whose condition has been met should therefore be fulfilled.
For detailed religious guidance we recommend consulting the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı).
